Businesses I Helped Create
On my way to becoming a high school social studies teacher, I took a temp gig that led to a thirty-year run building and growing start-ups. These are my favorites.
I was among the founding employees at Capella — the first fully-online university in the United States. Over my fourteen years, we grew from 37 students to more than 35,000 and went public on the NASDAQ in 2006. Capella instilled in me a love for innovation and a deep appreciation for the importance of extending access to education to people everywhere.
I was the Co-Founder and CEO of GoKart Labs, a digital product studio serving clients in health care, education, and financial services. We were also an active incubator and developed and spun off several new businesses. GoKart was acquired by West Monroe Partners in 2019.
An educational platform that provides low-cost online college credit courses. Sophia was acquired by Capella University in 2012 and – as of 2025 – students have completed more than 500,000 courses and saved more than $500 million in college tuition.
I was the Founder and CEO of The Big Know, which offered health education for the streaming age. Launched in 2015, The Big Know was recognized as an industry-leading learning experience platform and health education provider. It was acquired by mPulse Health in 2020.
Businesses I’m Cheering For
I love helping entrepreneurs and believe start-ups are vital to our society. These are some of the companies I’m helping as an advisor, investor or both.
I’m also a Limited Partner in Mairs & Power Venture Capital fund, supporting tech start-ups in Minnesota and the upper Midwest.
